Underwater Treadmill

Electrical Stimulation

Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation is the use of an electrical current to help stimulate muscle tissues in the target area to contract. NMES sends electrical impulses to nerves, causing muscles to contract. It can be used to prevent muscle atrophy, offsetting the effects of disuse that may occur after surgery or injury.

Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) decreases pain and inflammation by providing a low level electrical current which disrupts the normal pain perception pathways.

Therapeutic Laser

Laser therapy, or “photobiomodulation,” is the use of specific wavelengths of light to create therapeutic effects. It is a drug-free, surgery-free solution to improve healing time, increase circulation, relieve pain, reduce swelling and increase range of motion.

During each painless treatment, laser energy increases circulation, drawing water, oxygen, and nutrients to the damaged area. This creates an optimal healing environment that reduces inflammation, swelling, muscle spasms, stiffness, and pain.

For most conditions, we recommend a multi-visit treatment plan. Treatments vary in length, but most sites require 2 to 8 minutes. A majority of patients exhibit greater comfort and mobility within 12 to 24 hours after a laser treatment.

Therapeutic Ultrasound

Ultrasound uses sound waves to create heating (thermal effects) and vibration (non-thermal effects) to affect tissue healing. Ultrasound is beneficial for various conditions, including wounds, tendon and ligament damage, muscle relaxation, restricted range of motion and scar tissue, inflammation, localized swelling, and pain.

Specially Designed Exercises

Exercise can benefit patients in many ways. It can assist in increasing range of motion, stability, endurance and strength. Exercise improves balance, motor control, proprioception and flexibility. Our veterinarians  use exercises to help normalize muscle tone, reduce pain, promote functional independence.

Therapeutic exercise is a key component of any rehabilitation program for a variety of ailments. It is the basis treatment for animals that are obese, and is commonly a component of a total treatment plan for numerous other problems. Therapeutic exercise includes activities and techniques to improve physical function and overall health.

In physical rehabilitation, programs may be developed to treat injuries, to stimulate healing of the injuries, and to enhance reconditioning of the injured segment. Because of the biomechanical forces acting on the body during the reparative phases of healing, certain segments may become stronger than other segments. Exercise programs should be implemented to remedy any conditioning imbalances of the body. The basic goals should be to allow the tissues to heal, then to recondition the tissues so that they can accept predetermined

workloads, and finally to recondition the entire body to balance any conditioning deficits.

Stretching can also be use to improve flexibility and promote better range of motion, better circulation, and provide more oxygen to muscles.

Dry Needling

At Infinite PawsAbilities, we offer a unique form of physical therapy that helps decrease musculoskeletal pain in dogs!

In canine physical therapy, numerous manual therapies are utilized to decrease a pet's musculoskeletal pain. Trigger point dry needling is such a technique. Therapeutic, trigger point dry needling aims to reduce your dog's myofascial pain caused by myofascial trigger points and the resulting muscle spasm and dysfunction.

Dry needling is a general term for a therapeutic procedure that involves multiple advances of a filament needle (sterile needle) into the myofascial trigger points.

Dry needling is not an injection, but sterile placed needles that deactivate the trigger point (or knotted muscle), thereby reducing pain and restoring regular length and function of the involved muscle. Dry needling is an effective treatment for acute and chronic pain, rehabilitation from injury, and even pain and injury prevention, with very few side effects.

Dry needling also benefits the immune, inflammatory, biochemical, vascular, and neurological systems. Dry needling is extremely effective at eliminating canine neuromuscular dysfunction that leads to pain and functional deficits.

The Difference Between Dry Needling and Acupuncture

  • Dry needling is a technique that emphasizes treating the neuro-musculoskeletal systems based on pain patterns, muscular dysfunction, and other orthopedic signs and symptoms.
  • Dry needling relies upon the time of treatment of physical examination and assessment to guide treatment.
  • Acupuncture is a treatment based on eastern medical diagnosis, requiring training in Chinese medicine.
  • Acupuncture is the stimulation of specific acupuncture points along the skin of the body. According to traditional Chinese medicine, stimulating specific acupuncture points corrects imbalances in the flow of qi through channels known as meridans.

Joint Injections

Joint injections are use as part of a  multimodal approach to pain management and arthritis.  They allow us to relieve arthritic pain by reducing friction and improving shock absorption properties inside the joints.  With Joint Injections we are treating the actual cause of your pet's pain rather than simply masking the symptoms.

  • Spryng™ is administered using a sterile needle inserted into the synovial space of an affected joint and is appropriate for use in joint locations throughout the body. Spryng™ is not a drug and does not rely on pharmaceutical, chemical or metabolic action to achieve the intended effects.

  • Synovetin OA is dosed directly into the elbow joint, right where the pain is. There, it targets the source of inflammation that leads to pain and causes your dog to limp. Synovetin OA is unique in that it treats only the affected joint(s) and is not absorbed into your dog’s body like traditional dog arthritis treatments. You can be confident that treatment with Synovetin OA is safe for relieving arthritis pain in dogs.

Musculoskeletal Ultrasound

Ultrasound imaging uses sound waves to produce pictures of muscles, tendons, ligaments, nerves and joints throughout the body. It is used to help diagnose sprains, strains, tears, trapped nerves, arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions. Ultrasound is safe, noninvasive, and does not use ionizing radiation.

This procedure requires little to no special preparation. With an increasing awareness of soft tissue injury by veterinarians specializing in canine sports medicine, orthopedics, and rehabilitation, diagnostic ultrasound is now being utilized to diagnose them.

There are multiple advantages over other diagnostic imaging modalities for the evaluation of soft tissue injuries in dogs and cats:

  • Does not require anesthesia
  • Lower cost than MRI (easier, more frequent rechecks)
  • Significant amount of detail in multiple angles can be obtained by ultrasound of the affected structure
  • clear picture of soft tissues that do not show up well on x-ray images

AIS PennHip Hip Dysplasia Screening

Snoopy getting fitted for a cart

AIS PennHIP testing is accurate in puppies as young as 16 weeks of age. It gives an estimate of the risk for painful osteoarthritis (OA) of canine hip dysplasia (CHD) later in life. With this information, preventive and palliative strategies can be recommended by the PennHIP-trained veterinarian.

All dogs can benefit from PennHIP testing. For pet dogs found to be at risk to develop hip OA, early intervention can help prevent or lessen the severity of CHD. For working/service dogs, identifying a dog with healthy hips can extend the working life of the dog. For breeding dogs, early detection of at-risk hips can allow the breeder to make early, informed decisions as to which dogs to keep in breeding programs.
